This is an opportunity for us to make a few initial observations concerning the principal characteristics of its process of diffusion, in order to attempt to bring together in this way the general events which favoured it and the causes which on the whole conditioned its taking root. I was practically obliged to choose to emphasize the Wealth of Nations and leave aside an examination of the diffusion of Smith’s other works, and in particular the Theory of Moral Sentiments. In the period under consideration, these works were not subjected to detailed research.
